An input gear train for gear box has an input gear wheel (22) coupled to the input shaft (18) meshing with a second gear wheel (24) fitted to the layshaft (30) of the gearbox. The input gear is hollowed out on the input shaft side and has two unequal length shaft stubs which support the inner races of two inclined roller bearings (46, 48). The rollers can be plain or tapered. The slightly recessed mounting of the input side bearing reduces the lateral torque from the input shaft and reduces bearing wear. The second gear wheel is supported by a floating roller bearing (32).
