PURPOSE: A semiconductor memory device is provided to prevent error in IC operation due to data having an error by preventing data having an error from being output to a CPU or a peripheral block. CONSTITUTION: The semiconductor memory device comprises the first and the second ROM cell(31a,31b), and a word line decoder(33) selects one of the ROM cells according to a selection signal from external and addresses a specific word line of the selected ROM cell. The first and the second check pattern part(32a,32b) store a check pattern for reading data read error of each ROM cell to correspond to the first and the second ROM cell. A check word line decoder(34) enables the check pattern part corresponding to the ROM cell selected by the word line decoder. The first and the second sense amplifier(36a,36b) senses data of ROM cells whose word line is addressed and the check pattern of the check pattern part. A bit line decoder(35) controls one of the first and the second sense amplifier to sense data of the ROM cells whose word line is addressed and another one to sense the check pattern of the enabled check pattern part. A data bus transfers data of the ROM cells to an IC. A comparison circuit(38) outputs a check signal determining the operation of the IC receiving data of the ROM cells by comparing the check pattern with data for checking error. And a buffer circuit outputs data and check pattern of the ROM cells sensed by the first and the second sense amplifier to the data bus and the comparison circuit respectively according to the selection signal.
