PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve assembly for controlling the amount of coolant exiting from an engine. SOLUTION: This valve assembly 20 includes a valve housing 66 that is mounted to the engine 12 and defines a passage 102 that is in fluid communication with a coolant outlet 32 in the engine 12. A motor 68 in the valve housing 66 drives a valve shaft 74 that extends into the passage 102 and on which a butterfly valve plate is mounted. The physical geometry of the valve assembly is not significantly effected by changes in coolant temperature or coolant contamination and that integrated the valve member and an actuator in a single assembly to improve packaging and material use and eliminates potential coolant leak points.
