PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that a call received when a user left a portable telephone during charging operation of a battery cannot be answered and an information is missed, and a problem that the battery is shut off earlier for a call received when a residual capacity of the battery is low. SOLUTION: A control unit 1 compares a measured battery voltage from a voltage measuring circuit 10 with a prescribed voltage A indicative of the end of charging, and sets an answer phone function during charging operation of the battery if it has not yet be set from an operating section 6. Consequently, an incoming call can be prevented from being missed to be received during charging operation. Furthermore, the control unit 1 compares the measured battery voltage with a prescribed voltage B close to the level of battery shutoff, and sets an answer phone function if the measured battery voltage is lower than the prescribed voltage B.
