Die casting machine (1) has casting mold (6, 7), spray unit (8) for a barrier fluid, and a hydraulic assembly using a hydraulic fluid containing glycol. The escaping fluid (12), which also includes barrier fluid (10), is collected in a container (11) at the mold under only a section of the die casting machine. A sample is taken from the collected fluid for measurement to determine the hydraulic fluid content. According to the measurements, the collected fluid is either passed to the buffer tank (21) of a reprocessing station (19) for the barrier fluid with a number of settling chambers, or discarded for disposal if the hydraulic fluid content is too high. The fluid sample, containing a marker substance, is measured automatically using a photometry system, where the optical transmission of the fluid is measured with a wavelength of 200-20000 nm.
