PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a carbamate which can be obtained in high selectivity and high yield at a low cost by a simple method, and to provide a method for producing an isocyanate usable in industry, which can be produced by using the carbamate obtained by the method. SOLUTION: The carbamate is produced by reacting a nonaromatic amine selected from the group consisting of an aliphatic amine, an alicyclic amine and an araliphatic amine, with an alkyl aryl carbonate. The isocyanate is produced by thermally decomposing the obtained carbamate. When the carbamate is produced by the method, the alkyl carbamate can be obtained in high selectivity and high yield by a simple installation. When the isocyanate is produced by the method, a polyisocyanate industrially usable as a raw material for a polyurethane can be produced easily and efficiently. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
