PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform an image formation which prevents scratch on an image carrier 1 even in use of a toner including magnetic toner and nonmagnetic toner and exhibits satisfactory cleaning performance. SOLUTION: An image forming method having a step for forming a toner image on the image carrier by using a toner containing magnetic substance and a toner containing no magnetic substance, a step for transferring the toner image on the image carrier to a transfer material, thereby developing the toner image, and a step for cleaning the image carrier with a cleaning means after the development, is characterized in that the cleaning means has a cleaning blade 30, an equalizing mechanism which brings the cleaning blade 30 into uniform contact with the image carrier 1, and is provided with a reciprocating mechanism which reciprocates the cleaning blade 30 in the longitudinal direction of the image carrier while keeping the cleaning blade 30 in contact with the image carrier 1, and when the toner used for the development contains a magnetic substance, the reciprocating mechanism is not actuated, and conversely, when the toner used for the development contains no magnetic substance, the reciprocating mechanism is actuated.
