A detection device has first and second electrodes for immersion in liquid under test; semipermeable membrane to delimit sample volume from body of liquid and allows liquid to pass to reach sample volume while preventing solids carried in liquid form from reaching sample volume; and sensor having sensing element. An integrated element having porous or permeable substrate carrying the first electrode and a heater is provided within sample volume. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a method of preparing a sample of liquid for detection of impurities comprising providing first and second electrodes (38,40) within the liquid, applying voltage between first and second electrodes to create a region of increased pH and a region of reduced pH at respective anode and cathode electrodes, detecting a characteristic of the liquid in a first of the regions of changed pH, passing liquid from body of liquid under test through semipermeable membrane to reach the first region, and heating the liquid in the first region at constant temperature; and (2) an integrated element. |
