PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic still camera that can obtain an image with no deficient exposure without losing a shutter chance even at imaging under a deficient exposure at a dark place. SOLUTION: The electronic still camera provided with an image pickup device 3 imaging an object image passing through an imaging lens 1 to provide an output of an image signal and a flash 9 used when a release switch 6 is depressed at a deficient exposure, is characterized in to comprise: a discrimination means that discriminates whether or not charging of the flash 9 is finished or whether or not the luminous quantity is deficient when the release switch 6 is depressed; and an amplifier means that applies amplification processing to the image signal outputted from the image pickup device 3 so as to avoid the deficient exposure from taking place when the discrimination means discriminates that the charging is not finished or the luminous quantity is deficient.
