The minimal gene set encoded by the basic genetic operating system can contain the functional categories of transcription, translation, aerobic metabolism, glycolysis/pyruvate dehydrogenase/pentose phosphate pathways, carbohydrate metabolism, central intermediary metabolism, nucleotide metabolism, transport and binding proteins, and housekeeping functions.
