Internal combustion engine comprises a combustion chamber (3) defined by fixed housing walls (1, 2) and a piston (5) moving within the chamber, a fuel injector (10) having a fuel injection nozzle (11), and a pore body (4) in which at least partial combustion of fuel and air occurs. The fuel injection nozzle opens into a pre-chamber (6) connected by an overflow cross-section (8) to the combustion chamber. The overflow cross-section of the pre-chamber is arranged relative to the pore body so that the combustion gas/fuel mixture produced during combustion in the pre-chamber is blown out of the overflow cross-section at least partly into the pore body. Preferred Features: The pre-chamber and the fuel injector are formed as a common exchangeable unit.
