PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide inexpensive steel for a shaft of an OA (office automation) apparatus which has satisfactory corrosion resistance in the room temperature environment, has no need of plating treatment, and has excellent machinability as well, to provide a shaft for an OA apparatus obtained by using the steel as the stock, and to provide a production method therefor. SOLUTION: The steel for a shaft of an OA apparatus has a composition containing <=0.05% C, 0.30 to 0.60% Si, 0.10 to 0.50% Mn, <=0.03% P, <=0.01% S, 7 to 13% Cr, <=0.5% Cu, <=0.5% Ni, <=1.0% Mo and <=0.10% Al, and the balance Fe with impurities. Further, the shaft for an OA apparatus is made of the above steel, and has a surface roughness of <=3μm by Ra prescribed in JIS B 0601. In the production method therefor, after finish machining, the steel is subjected to degreasing treatment with an aqueous solution having a nitric acid concentration of >=10 vol.%.
