PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discrimination device and method that can accurately discriminate whether or not a composite video signal includes an analog protection system signal. SOLUTION: A signal detection section 391 detects the analog protection system signal included in the composite video signal. An evaluation value generating section 392 generates a first evaluation value with a value within a prescribed range on the basis of the result of detection by the signal detection section 391. A signal detection section 393 detects the analog protection system signal included in the composite video signal by a system different from that of the signal detection section 391. An evaluation value generating section 394 generates a second evaluation value with a value within a prescribed range on the basis of the result of detection by a signal detection section 393. A discrimination section 395 discriminates whether or not the composite video signal includes the analog protection system signal on the basis of the first and second evaluation values.
