PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing high purity coin metal chalcogenides such as cadmium chalcogenide by a simple and safe method. SOLUTION: A compound expressed by the following chemical formula (1) (wherein, E is a chalcogen; M is Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Mg or R<4> 2 N- (R<4> is hydrogen or an alkyl group; and R<4> may form a ring); and R is an alkyl group, an aryl group, R<1> R<2> N- or R<3> O-) is brought into reaction with a halide of coin metal in a solvent consisting of a least either water or alcohol to produce a compound expressed by the following formula (2) (wherein, A is a coin metal). The produced compound is left standing in the air or heated or the produced compound is brought into alcoholysis reaction in an alcohol which may contain water to produce the coin metal chalcogenide.
