PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem in a conventional optical device that it is difficult to accurately carry out the patterning of a water-repellent film and a hydrophilic film for the purpose of defining the position of a surface boundary between two liquids while a voltage is not applied. SOLUTION: The optical device houses a first liquid 221 having conductivity or polarity and a second liquid 222 which is not mixed with the first liquid in containers 202, 205, 206, and varies its optical property by controlling the shape of the surface boundary between both liquids by a voltage application. A first surface 208 with which the first liquid comes into contact and a second surface 209 with which the second liquid comes into contact, are formed in the inner surface of the container as discontinuous surfaces which intersect at a prescribed angle. Thereby, the outer peripheral part of the surface boundary is held on a line of intersection between the first surface and the second surface in the state where the voltage for controlling the shape of the surface boundary is not applied.
