PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a timber thickness estimating method capable of easily obtaining the thickness of a brace present in a wall in an existing building. SOLUTION: An X-ray apparatus 8 is arranged at a predetermined distance from a surface of an internal wall material 7b of the wall 7 in which the brace 4 is present, and a density gauge 10 is arranged in the vicinity of the surface of the internal wall material 7b. In addition, a film 9 is pasted to a surface of an external wall material 7a of the wall 7. The brace 4 present in the wall 7 and the density gauge 10 are photographed by the X-ray apparatus 8 by X-rays. By comparing the density of the brace 4 photographed in a film 9 with the density of a part 10a of the density gauge 10 and the density of a part 10b through visual inspection, a densitometer, or the like, it is possible to estimate the density of the brace 4. In other words, between the density of the part 10a of the density gauge 10 and the density of the part 10b, the thickness that is closer to the density of the brace 4 is taken as the thickness of the brace 4.
