PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device that can reduce failure in photographing even when mis-discrimination or the like of an image mode takes place in automatic discrimination of the imaging mode. SOLUTION: A digital camera 1 being the imaging apparatus is provided with a photographing mode discrimination section 50 that automatically selects one of a plurality of photographing modes and sets the selected photographing mode on the basis of a photographing condition under which the digital camera 1 photographs an object. The photographing mode discrimination section 50 selects one photographing mode on the basis of the photographing condition received from a WB arithmetic section 42, a range finding arithmetic section 43, a photometry arithmetic section 44 and a control CPU 40. The photographing mode discrimination section 50 gives the selected photographing mode to the control CPU 40 to activate a display control section 45 of the control CPU 40 to allow a photographing mode display section 3a of a finder display section 3 and a liquid crystal display section 10 to display the photographing mode. The finder display section 3 and the liquid crystal display section 10 display the photographing mode together with display of an image of the object.
