The invention comprises 4-vinyl trimellitate and 4-vinyl trimellitic anhydride and a process for their preparation by reacting trimellitic anhydride with vinyl acetate at about 0-100 DEG C. in the presence of a catalytic amount of a mercuric salt of a mineral acid to give the anhydride, and treating the anhydride with sufficient water to form the vinyl trimellitate. The reaction may be carried out using an excess of vinyl acetate as solvent or in an organic solvent such as acetone, and copper resinate may be present as a polymerization inhibitor. Examples are given. Reference is made also to the reaction of trimellitic acid and vinyl acetate to form a mixture of mono-, di- and tri-vinyl isomers.ALSO:Polymers are prepared from 4-vinyltrimellitic anhydride and 4-vinyltrimellitate (see Division C2). Polymerization may be effected in bulk or in a solvent in the presence of a catalyst. Other polymerizable substances may be present, e.g. vinyl acetate or acrylonitrile. Water-soluble polymers are obtainable from 4-vinyltrimellitate. The polymers may be reacted with glycols or epoxides to produce unsaturated polyesters. In the examples (1) 4-vinyltrimellitic anhydride is polymerized in the presence of tert.-butyl peroxide; solutions of the product in dimethyl formamide yield continuous films; (2) the product of example 1 is mixed with ethylene glycol and baked at 140 DEG C. to yield a hard film insoluble in dimethyl formamide; (3) 4-vinyltrimellitic anhydride is polymerized in dioxane in the presence of benzoyl peroxide; (4) 4-vinyltrimellitate is polymerized in aqueous solution in the presence of potassium persulphate or (Example 5) potassium persulphate and sodium bisulphate; (6) the product of Example 5 is converted into a water-soluble film; (7) ethylene glycol is dissolved in the product of Example 5 and the mixture is baked at 170 DEG C. to yield a water-insoluble film. |
