PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sulfur-resistant exhaust gas cleaning catalyst with which nitrogen oxides contained in an exhaust gas containing sulfur oxides is stably cleaned by reducing the nitrogen oxides. SOLUTION: At least one selected from materials each including a main phase of a molecular composition expressed by formula: A1-x BO3-y , wherein x is >=0 and <=1.0; and y is >=0 and <=1.0 and having a crystal structure being a perovskite-type structure or a brownmillerite-type structure, formed by using an element having a large ion size and small electronegativity as the ion of B-site of the formula mentioned above and from complex oxides analogous to the materials mentioned above is used as an active component of a reduction catalyst for nitrogen oxides.
