A towing bar, in particular for aircraft, comprises a first tube 1 connected with a rod 9 and a second tube 2 connected to an end plate 3 of a cylinder 4 which contains a foamed plastics spring 6 between discs 7 and 8, the rod 9 in the normal position of the bar passing through a second end plate 5, discs 7 and 8 and spring 6, and being prevented from being withdrawn through the spring by nut 10. Annular spaces 12 and 13 allow for radial expansion of spring 6 when compressed. If the bar is under compression the end 1a of tube 1 passes through end plate 5 causing the spring to be compressed while rod 9 passes into tube 2. In tension of the bar, rod 9 is pulled out from cylinder 4 causing the disc 8 to move towards disc 7, thereby compressing the spring 6. The spring 6 may alternatively be a steel spring, e.g. plate or annular. |
