PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas internal combustion engine to adjust a compression autoignition period of time of a preceding mixture of a fuel gas and air, and achieve high efficiency. SOLUTION: An electrode measure 29 is located at a cylinder head 16, with its tip part protruding into a combustion chamber 18, the electrode measure 29 comprising a linear electrode member 33 made of a heat-resistant metal material and an electrical insulating member 34 made of a heat-resistant electrical insulating material covering the electrode member 33 with its tip part being exposed, and a power source 30 is installed to place a voltage between the electrode member 33 and a cylinder 8, the cylinder head 16. An electric field is formed in the combustion chamber 18, by applying a voltage from the power source 30, and the compression autoignition period of time of the preceding mixture is adjusted by increasing or decreasing intensity of the electric field.
