PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video recorder in which video recording quality can e properly set according to the write performance of a storage device. SOLUTION: A video recording quality setting section 12 allows a user to set the compression rate of a moving image, that is, video recording quality. Furthermore, a video recording section 13 conducting the compression allows the user to designate storage devices 5a to 5c that store moving image data after compression. The designated storage device among the storage devices 5a to 5c is notified to a video recording quality setting section 12, which instructs a performance detection section 14 on detection of write speed performance of the storage devices 5a to 5c. Then the video recording quality setting section 12 discriminates the highest video recording quality possible for the write speed performance detected by the performance detection section 14 and compares the discriminated video recording quality possible for recording with the video recording quality set by the user. When the video recording quality set by the user is higher in the quality, the video recording quality setting section 12 automatically revises the setting to the video recording quality possible for recording discriminated by itself.
