PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for switching to an alternative downstream channel (DSC) when a primary DSC fails and eliminating the need of initializing a cable modem. SOLUTION: The cable modem and a plurality of CMTS modules are connected by one cable and one of the CMTSs functions as a backup for the other. Each CMTS simultaneously broadcasts the DSC on its own assigned one of cable channels accessible by the cable modem, it is assigned to provide the primary DSC for the cable modem and each cable modem is assigned in addition to the primary DSC the alternative DSC. The alternative DSC is supplied by the CMTS connected to the cable different from the primary CMTS. As a result, when the primary DSC of the cable modem becomes invalid, the cable modem is switched to the alternative DSC supplied by the different CMTS and an operation as the backup is performed.
