A method for manufacturing a gasket includes the step of vulcanizing a mixture of nitrile butadiene rubbee, ground cork, and a catalyst in a mold to form the gasket, so that between about 20 and about 45 percent by weight of thje mixture is ground cork, and between about 45 and about 80 percent of the mixture is nitrile butadiene rubber. The ground cork has a particle size of lees that 0.033 inch. The gasket produced by thmethod consists essentially of a single, uniformly distributed vulcanite of nitrile butadiene rubber and ground cork.
