A tool for the perforation of planiform workpieces, in particular of sheet steel (23), comprises two tool pieces (9, 17) lying opposite the workpiece (23), transverse thereto, which may be moved relative to each other along a stroke direction (6) with a working stroke, comprising a slot stroke and a head stroke. Each tool piece (9, 17) comprises two slot cutters, running in the slot direction (40) and at least one head cutter (37, 38), running perpendicular thereto and at a distance from the longitudinal ends of the slot cutters. The slot cutters of the one tool piece (9) are divided about the level of the head cutter (38) on the other tool piece (17). The front section of the slot cutters, in the direction of the slot (40), is provided on a front cutter support (13) and the rear section of the slot cutters, in the direction of the slot (40), is provided on a rear cutter support (14). Along the slot stroke, the cutter supports (13, 14) are connected to each other by means of a switchable locking device (32). For the head stroke, said connection is released and the front cutter support (13) and the rear cutter support (14) may move relative to each other in the stroke direction (6).
