The instrument has a head (10) at its far end, with a working part such as a forceps fixed to it. The working part is operated by a moveable push rod (14) located within the hollow inner section of the shaft and the head part. A seal is formed by an elastic tube (22) which covers the rod. The near end of the tube is joined to the rod and the far end is joined to the tube or head by passing over a sleeve (20) which extends back from the head.
