PURPOSE: To improve the efficiency of the setting work in a buttonholing sewing machine. CONSTITUTION: This buttonholing sewing machine 100 is provided with a knife receiving base 17 driven by a cloth cutting motor 21 and capable of controlling a descent quantity, a RAM(random access memory) 3 storing a plurality of pattern data for forming seams around a buttonhole, an operation panel 5 for selecting one of a plurality of holing control data, and a CPU 1 forming over casting seams around the buttonhole and lowering the knife receiving base 17 from a prescribed reference position to a cloth cutting position to form the buttonhole based on the pattern data selected by the operation panel 5. The pattern data include a correction descent quantity for correcting the descent quantity of the knife receiving base 17, and the CPU 1 drives the knife receiving base 17 based on the fixed reference descent quantity and the correction descent quantity included in the selected pattern data.
