For operating an internal combustion engine has the steps are provided which include determining a pressure in a suction portion from a position of a throttle flap, passing a signal produced from the position of the throttle flap through delay means, using the passed signal for forming a limit for a permissible value region, utilizing as the delay means at least two delay elements, such that a delay of one of the delay elements is switched off when a speed changes with the position of the throttle valve above a positive limiting value, and the delay of the other delay element is switched off when the speed changes with the position of the throttle valve below a negative limiting value.
