PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a wide dimension taken for the effective width of a flange section that controls a roller position, even if a relief groove is formed by use of a rather large cutting tool of a usual type. SOLUTION: In the method for forming the relief groove 5 by machining the corner 8 of a raceway plane 6 of a roller 3 of a roller bearing and a side face 7 of the flange section that controls a roller position by use of the cutting tool 10, the flange section 4 is formed in advance so as to make the angle of its side face 7 wider than the angle of the final complete shape with respect to the raceway plane 6. In this state, the relief groove 5 is formed by machining the corner 8 of the raceway plane 6 and the side face 7 of the flange section by use of the cutting tool 10, and then, the flange section 4 is pressurized and deformed so as to approximate the angle formed between the side face 7 of the flange section and the raceway plane 6 to the angle of the final complete shape.
