<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording/reproducing device realizing a thumb nail function without violating copy limit when a source where only one generation copying is permitted is recorded. SOLUTION: When the source where the number of copying times is not limited is recorded, reduced pictures 63a to 63d are previously generated. At the time of display, the pictures are displayed at high speed by using the source. When the source where the recording of only one generation is permitted is recorded, 'copy limit violation' is avoided by not generating (preserving) the reduced picture. When the source where only one generation copying is permitted is recorded, pointers 64a to 64d showing a position where the original picture of the reduced picture is preserved is preserved in video data.
