PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet recorder comprising a carriage carrying an ink tank and a recording head in which the residual quantity of ink in the ink tank can be detected without requiring any special mechanism or component, and a method for detecting the residual quantity of ink. SOLUTION: A carriage is moved by driving a motor and drive control of the motor is stopped after a specified constant speed movement is reached and then the stop position of the carriage is detected by means of an encoder. Residual quantity of ink in an ink tank carried on the carriage is detected based on the moving distance of the carriage due to inertial movement thereof after drive control of the motor is stopped. |
