<p>An electrically powered stapler includes a sliding staple-driving blade (64) reciprocated by a lever (52), crank mechanism (46), and electric motor (34). Jamming is prevented by mounting the lever's fulcrum on a plunger (58), which has an enlarged head (122) taht is releasably retained to a flexible collar (60) of a fixed support (114) by a plurality of flexible fingers (120). The plunger (58) can disengaged from the collar when a predetermined force is directed away from the plunger, such as occurs on the fulcrum during a jammed condition when the blade (64) cannot drive a staple and stalls. The pivot point of the lever (52) shifts to the blade end of the lever and the plunger is reciprocated by the lever instead of the blade, allowing the motor to cycle through a full range of motion and the plunger to reengaged the collar (60).</p> |
