The applicator (10), to apply a liquid or paste coating (14) to the surface of a moving web (18), has a curtain applicator unit (12) where a curtain (16) of the coating falls by gravity on to the web. A limit (20) prevents surface coating over a defined width, and at least at one edge strip (18a) of the web, by deflecting the edge strip out of the web plane (E) at least at the applicator.
