The roof lining (4) which covers the roof skin from the inside of the vehicle forms the safety device which in the event of the vehicle turning over increases in volume in at least some areas so that the lining absorbs the impact. The roof lining can be formed as a hollow body such as a plastics bubble which increases in volume when a medium is introduced when the car turns over.
