PURPOSE: Provided is a composition for improving liver function and treating hepatitis containing a Valerianaceae extract or low molecular weight of water soluble fraction thereof which have low drug dependency and no adverse effect, recover immunity of host, treat hepatitis, regenerate damaged hepatocytes and have protection effect on liver. CONSTITUTION: A composition for improving liver function and treating hepatitis is characterized by containing, as an active ingredient, a Valerianaceae extract or low molecular weight of water soluble fraction thereof which are obtained b the steps of: extracting Valerianaceae with water; removing proteins, fiber, resin and organic solvents from the extract; and purifying the water layer thereof.
