PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal element which dispenses with a pretreatment and so on and has high speed responsiveness. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal element comprising a nematic liquid crystal held between two sheets of substrates with a structure capable of being applied with voltage, the liquid crystal is aligned between the two sheets of substrates of which the uniaxial alignment directions are parallel with each other without being applied with an electric field and further the liquid crystal is aligned in such a way that a pretilt of the liquid crystal on the side of one of the substrate is <=10 deg. and a pretilt of the liquid crystal on the side of the other of the substrates in a part deviating from a central position between the substrates close to the substrate boundary is nearly vertical.
