A reduced component optical switch module includes a plurality of ports (28- 1,28-2,28-3,28-4) wherein each port (28-1) includes an optical input and an optical output. A plurality of switchable deflectors (30a,30b,30c,32a,32b) i n combination with a plurality of non-switchable deflectors (34a,34b,34c) can be used to establish transmission paths between pairs of ports to support traff ic reciprocity. In one embodiment, the ports and switchable elements are configured so as to provide substantially constantly transmission paths with in the respective module. In another embodiment, additional deflector elements can be provided to implement loop-back functionality at one or more of the ports.
