The invention relates to an improved sand filter for water purifiers such as those used in swimming pools and provided with a pump that suctions out water from the pool to the filter and returns the clean water by forming water jets, the filter thereof consisting of a deposit filled with sand through which the water circulates vertically. The flow direction of the water can be inverted to clean the sand of the filter, which has a tube for discharging the sand, one of said tube being located in the lower, inner part of said deposit while the other end accesses the outside of said deposit, where it is provided with a lid or an element to cut the water flow. An element that cuts the water flow is arranged in the piping that channels the water suctioned out from the pool.
