The device has a housing (4) with an ignition cartridge (6) to inflate the airbag. The housing can be turned manually or electro-mechanically, between positions, in which the airbag can be activated or is de-activated. The actual position of the housing is supplied to a regulator, which issues a warning signal when the housing is in an intermediate position, and which is in permanent electrical contact with the ignition cartridge. When in activating positions, the housing gives access to a gas generator (12). When in de-activating position, it gives access to a blow-off valve (14).
