A surgical scalpel (2) has a sliding cover (10) which fits within the overall contour of the body and slides between an extended position covering a blade (4) and a retracted position exposing the blade (4) for use. An upper surface (38) of the body is left clear. The cover (10) has nibs (28) which slide in grooves (22) in the handle to hold the cover on the handle. Pips (34) on the handle engage in recesses (35) in the cover to hold the cover in extended and retracted positions. |
