A system and method thereof for using a portable conditional access block (e.g. removable smart card interface) in an intelligent transceiver (e.g. a set-top box). The intelligent transceiver is adapted to receive different types of removable smart card interfaces (320) particular to the different content providers (e.g. digital broadcast system operators). A smart card (325) provided by the digital broadcast system operator is inserted into the removable smart card interface (320). A scramble key provided by the digital broadcast system operator is used with the smart card to execute a scheme for descrambling scrambled audio and video digital signals received by the intelligent transceiver. The removable smart card interface permits ready interchangeability of the conditional access block depending on the descrambling scheme of the broadcast system operator. Thus, the same intelligent transceiver design can be used with different broadcast system operators. |
