PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively use an engine brake during downhill travel while ensuring up-shift using the characteristic of a shift map on a plain road. SOLUTION: This automatic transmission for a vehicle is provided with means S2-S4 for adding to count = preceding count +1 when accelerator opening is the specified valueαor less and the increase rate of engine speed or vehicle speed is the specified valueβor more; means S5, S5.01 for subtracting to count = preceding count -1 when accelerator opening is not less than the specified valueγlarger than the specified valueα; means S6-S9 for regulating the count to a range 0<=count<=C (the lower limit value 0 and the upper limit value C); means S10, S11 for comparing the count with the reference value A smaller than the upper limit value C to judge a downhill at count > A and to set downhill flag = 1; means S12, S13 for comparing the count with the reference value B smaller than the reference value A to set downhill flag = 0 at count <= B; and a means for inhibiting the up-shift of automatic transmission at downhill flag = 1.
