A rotary multi-head counter-pressure type filler includes an annular liquid chamber 10, Fig. 1, an annular chamber 12 from which compressed gas, e.g. air, is supplied to pressurize a vessel, e.g. a bottle to be liquid filled, and a chamber 38, Fig. 3, for the reception of gas from the vessel when liquid is being supplied to it. Each filling head 13 has a filling tube 16 supplied via a passage 26 and a valve 28; the latter is urged by a spring 29 towards its open position but is held closed by an eccentric 22 on a valve shaft 21. The latter is turned about its axis by a star-wheel 20 having arms which strike corresponding stops as the filler rotates; thus a valve face 19 attached to the shaft is turned relative a fixed valve disc 18, whereby to control the flow of compressed gas to and from the bottle. The valve disc and face have passages therein which, depending on the position of the star-wheel, interengage to control the gas flow therethrough. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a passage 30 feeds compressed gas from the chamber 12 to a passage in the valve, and a passage 31 leads from the valve to the upper end of the filler tube 16 to act as an equalizing passage. A further passage 32 extends from the valve to supply the bottle. A return air passage 33 leads from the filling tube to a passage 34 containing a float 35 for closing the return air passage when the liquid rises therein. The return air passage leads via the valve to a passage 36 and the chamber 38. Initially, the valve 18, 19 enables compressed gas to pass through the passage 32 into the bottle; the star-wheel is then turned so that gas may flow directly from the bottle to the chamber 38, by-passing the float 35. Further movement of the star-wheel causes the liquid valve 28 to be opened, thereby filling the bottle, and the displaced gas passes to the chamber 38. When the liquid level reaches the opening 33a, Fig. 2, it flows up the passages 33, 34. The float closes the return air path. The starwheel is again turned to bring the passages 31, 32 and 34 into communication, whereby liquid in the tube 16 and in the return air passage is fed into the bottle. Continued wheel movement connects the passages 31, 32 and 34 to a pressure release port 46 so relieving pressure through a throttle 40 and passage 39. The bottle is then removed from the filler, after which the star-wheel moves to a position where compressed gas is blown through the air return passages and filling tube to remove any liquid therein. In the modification of Fig. 4 the liquid filling tube is replaced by a part 52 having an air return tube 49 about which the liquid flows to the bottle which is applied to a centring device 54 supported by rods.
