PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate the control of positioning and recording timing of a head concerning a patterned medium having a recording track constituted by locating minimum magnetization inversion units while interposing non-magnetic domains. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium has a cluster 2 composed of minimum magnetization inversion units 21 respectively located at equal intervals in the lengthwise direction and width direction of the recording track, and the clusters 2 are respectively located at equal intervals in the lengthwise direction and width direction of the recording track. When a distance between the centers of minimum magnetization inversion units adjacent in the lengthwise direction of the recording track is defined as UL inside the cluster and as CL between the adjacent clusters, the condition of CL/UL<1 is established and when a distance between the centers of minimum magnetization inversion units adjacent in the width direction of the recording track is defined as UW inside the cluster and as CW between the adjacent clusters, the condition of CW/UW>1 is established.
