PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for processing an image signal is provided to improve an image quality of an expanded signal by converting image signal and expanding the converted signal. CONSTITUTION: A field memory(210) stores first and second field data with an interlace type received from an image signal receiving unit(100) by a field unit. A converting unit(240) reads data of the field memory(210) by a predetermined first or second operation mode and converts read data into an image signal selected in the operation mode. A multiplexer(220) reads first and second field data from the field memory(210) and selects one data between first and second field data by a control signal provided from the outside. An expanding unit(230) receives signals of the converting unit(240) and the multiplexer(220) by the control signal provided from the outside and vertically expands the received signals. A control unit(250) outputs the control signal to the field memory(210), the converting unit(240), the multiplexer(220), and the expanding unit(230) by the first and second operation modes.
