PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device such as a video camera and an electronic still camera that can improve accuracy when a white color area is large and can conduct white balance adjustment even when the white color area is small. SOLUTION: A block data detection circuit 6 divides an input image into a plurality of blocks to detect image data for each block. A white color area selection circuit 7 selects a block of a white color area. A white balance convergence discrimination width decision circuit 8 decreases a convergence discrimination width between color signals used to discriminate whether or not white balance adjustment is converged when number of blocks discriminated to be a white color area is increased. A white color area image data detection circuit 9 detects each color signal level in the white color area. A white balance adjustment 10 adjusts the white balance so that each color signal reaches the convergence discrimination width.
