<p>This invention provides a new water-based composition suitable for use on polyester-based substrates for increasing adhesion to overcoat. The composition has: (a) from about 1 to 8 percent solids by weight of core-shell latex polymer wherein the core has a lower Tg than the shell, the latex comprising: (1) the core formed from (i) about 60 to 95 parts by weight of at least one alpha , beta -ethylenically unsaturated monomer having from about 1 to 12 carbon atoms; (ii) 0 to about 35 parts by weight of bicyclic alkyl methacrylates; and (iii) at least 5 parts by weight of a polar monomer, based on a total weight of the core; and (2) the shell formed from (i) about 35 to 95 parts by weight of at least one alpha , beta -ethylenically unsaturated monomer having from about 1 to about 12 carbon atoms; (ii) 0 to about 60 parts by weight of at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of bicyclic alkyl methacrylates and aromatic methacrylates; and (iii) at least 5 parts by weight of a polar monomer, based on the total weight of the shell; (b) from about 4 to 16 percent solids by weight of a water-soluble polymer selected from the group consisting of acrylate-based resin, sulfonated polyester-based resin, vinyl-based resin, and combinations thereof; (c) from about 0.2 to 20 percent solids by weight of a melamine crosslinking agent; and (d) from about 0.05 to 0.2 percent solids by weight of a surfactant.</p> |
