PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately diagnose the abnormal state of an O2 sensor, heretofore difficult to diagnose, to prevent the occurrence of poor drivability due to troubleness on the O2 sensor, and besides to eliminate a need for a repair work by a dealer, incapable of diagnosing abnormality of the O2 sensor, and remarkably reduce a repair cost. SOLUTION: This O2 sensor detecting oxygen concentration in exhaust gas is situated in the middle of the exhaust passage of an engine, and a control means is provided to control diagnosis of the O2 sensor. In a so formed O2 sensor diagnosing device, the output voltage of the O2 sensor is detected before activation of the O2 sensor, a function to effect diagnosis of the O2 sensor according to a given abnormality decision condition is annexed to the control means.
