The air ratio of an internal combustion engine (6) with exhaust gas recirculation is regulated by predetermining a set value (mL,soll) characterizing the mass supply of fresh air, in accordance with operating parameters (mL,soll, nmot) and correcting this set value by superposing a correcting quantity (mL,korr) obtained using measurements of the exhaust gas air ratio. The corrected set value is then used as an input value for a regulating circuit (41) for exhausted gas recirculation. The correcting quantity is stored in a storage element (54) as a function of the operating parameter and when the operating point of the internal combustion engine (6) changes, the set value is superposed by the value for the correcting quantity that is stored for the new operating point.
