摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance light transmittance of a liquid crystal display element by forming a lens array corresponding to an array of pixels of a liquid crystal layer within a substrate of light incident side. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal layer 104 is positioned at the focus position of a lens array 108 or near to the position and 2n.f.tan&theta;<=W is satisfied, wherein f is the focus distance of the lens array 108, n is the refractive index of a layer between the lens array 108 and the liquid crystal layer 104, W is the width of a pixel of the liquid crystal layer 104 and &theta; is the widened angle of light made incident on the lens array 108. Main light beams A and B of illumination light are condensed on a pixel electrode 106 and the liquid crystal layer (effective pixel part) 104 positioned thereon and passed through them. With respect to obliquely incident light beams b1 and b2, the deviation value of the liquid crystal layer 104 against the deviation angle (the widened angle &theta;) from the main light beams is suppressed comparatively small and even obliquely incident light beams having a large deviation angle &theta;can be transmitted through the effective pixel part because the position of the buried type lens array 108 is near to the liquid crystal layer 104. Thereby, entirely the light transmittance of the element is more enhanced.
